GILDING WORKSHOP

Introduction to Water Gilding
Date: 7-10 April, 2010 (9am-4pm)
Location: Coleman Fine Art, 79 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401

Short Description:
A four-day hands-on course designed to familiarize the student with the centuries-old craft of water gilding. Fundamental procedures for water gilding will be reviewed and recipes will be discussed. Each student will create a 9 x12 inch frame to gesso, sand, water gild, and tone. Emphasis will be on creating a period frame with a 17th century Italian finish. All materials will be provided and included in the cost of the course.

WET PAINT 2010

Coleman Fine Art will host four of the country’s leading artists for the Seventh Annual plein air paint out in Charleston, SC, WET PAINT – March 22rd - 26th, 2010. This year’s WET PAINT will offer both Oil and Water Our featured artists will include two artists working in oil paint: Gregory Packard and George Strickland; and two artists working in watercolor media John Salminen and Mary Whyte.

The artists will paint different locations in and around the Charleston area for one week; typical locations might include, Lower Church Street, Shem Creek, Magnolia Gardens, Folly Beach, or Johns Island. Call the gallery to confirm the day’s locations. Please join us as we conclude the weeks work with a reception for the artists, and an opportunity to view the paintings on Friday, March 26th, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Coleman Fine Art. The reception is free and open to the public. Saturday morning, March 27, at 11:00 am the public is invited to join the artists as they lead a personal walk-through of the exhibition. The exhibition of WET PAINT 2010 will remain on view through April 25th, 2010.

Second Annual Mary Whyte Art Educator Award

The 2009 winner of the Mary Whyte Art Educator of the Year Award was presented to Dayton Colie, who teaches high school art at R.B. Stall High. Colie is pictures here with Gibbes Museum Director, Angela Mack, Mary Whyte and Smith B. Coleman. The 2009 Mary Whyte Art Educators Award was announced at the Annual Meeting of the Gibbes Museum of Art/Carolina Art Association on May 4, 2009 at 6 pm.

 
MARY WHYTE featured in International Artist

Mary Whyte is the featured artist for "The Art of the Portrait" in the October/November issue of International Artist magazine. The article is entitled "Mary Whyte: Capturing the Unseen" and showcases ten images of her watercolor portraits as we learn of her personal journey as a professional artist.
